Seeds are arriving daily and the sun is shining longer so it's time to start planting! First up are cole crops. Tomorrow we'll start the cauliflower, broccoli, and cabbages! For cauliflower, we're trying a mix of colors! The promise of the seed catalog is traditional white, purple graffiti, yellow cheddar, green and orange!
Snow Crown - a large white cauliflower
We'll also plant some romanesco which has the wonderful shapes and cool green color shown in the picture here! We grew this one last year and enjoyed it's mild, sweet flavor. If we're lucky we'll have more plants this year, including some to share at the market!
Romanesco - unique shapes and mild flavors!
Savoy - pretty and yummy!
We're also planting broccoli and several varieties of cabbage. Cabbage varieties will include a few savoy types! If you haven't tried savoy cabbage before it has a milder flavor than the more traditional types. The leaves are crinkled which seems to magnify the flavor if they are cooked.
Savoy - slice and dice for great flavors!
A favorite way for a summer slaw recipe is to chop to desired size, add salt and pepper to taste, and a dressing that is equal parts of extra virgin olive oil, rice vinegar, and pinot grigio and just a pinch of raw sugar (or processed sugar if that's what you have). This is a lighter version than traditional mayo based recipes and goes great with a chicken or fish dish. Just five months or so, and we should be able to try it out!
